How to use this catalog and its filters

Below the header, the showcase of cruises can be filtered three ways. The type filter isolates one family (sightseeing, night, dinner, lunch, drinks, private, Batobus, canal, holidays, family). The pier filter keeps only the boats leaving from a given quay, which is handy if your hotel is near Pont de l'Alma or you are walking out of the Musée d'Orsay. The platform filter shows what each of our three partners sells. The filters combine, and you can sort by number of reviews or by price.

Further down, the companies board works the same way: one filter by cruise type, another by platform, and the "official" column gives the price published on the company's own website. Each name links to our full review. If you are new to all this, the guide's home page explains in ten minutes how to choose.

The prices on the cards are the platforms' prices, checked regularly; the amount that counts is the one on the payment page. Cancellation terms vary from one cruise to the next and are always shown before you pay. Finally, the river line below places each pier against the bridges and landmarks: it is the quickest way to see that Port de Javel Haut is far to the west, at the foot of Pont Mirabeau, while the Vert-Galant is right in the center.

The one-hour narrated sightseeing cruise

This is the basic Seine river cruise, the one the French call a "bateau-mouche" whatever company runs it: one hour, live or recorded commentary, a loop toward Notre-Dame and back. Four companies share most of the market. Bateaux Parisiens leaves from Port de la Bourdonnais (pontoon 3), upstream of Pont d'Iéna; Vedettes de Paris from Port de Suffren, just downstream of the same bridge; Bateaux Mouches from Port de la Conférence, at Pont de l'Alma on the right bank; Vedettes du Pont Neuf from Square du Vert-Galant, at the tip of Île de la Cité.

Online prices run from €15 to €18 on the companies' own websites, €17 to €21 at the ticket window. What really differs is the commentary (an audio guide in about 14 languages plus a hostess at Bateaux Parisiens, a live French-English guide at Vedettes de Paris and Pont Neuf), the size of the boat and the direction of the loop. The full comparison is on one-hour Seine cruise; the relaxed approach (route, kids, when to go) is on Paris boat tours.

Seine night cruise and evening cruises

Most one-hour cruises keep running after dark, at the same price: same boat, same loop, with the quays lit up and the Eiffel Tower sparkling. The Eiffel Tower sparkles for five minutes at the start of every hour after dark, until at least 11 pm; on some evenings, especially in summer, it carries on later — check the tower's website for the day.

Two variations are worth knowing. In the evening, Vedettes de Paris swaps its guide for a drinks-and-music cruise (a playlist of French songs, no commentary), from about €20. And from April to September, Bateaux Parisiens runs a Notre-Dame & Champagne cruise from Quai de Montebello, with a live guide and a glass of champagne. One trap: on the Vedettes de Paris website, "Paris by Night" is a bus tour, with no cruise at all.

Our Seine night cruise page explains which departure to take each month, and Seine sunset cruise how to catch the golden light and then the first sparkle in the same hour.

Seine dinner cruise

About a dozen boats serve dinner on the Seine, from around €59 at Paris en Scène (water-only menu, Port de Javel Haut) to €250 before drinks on the Don Juan II, a Michelin-starred table that boards at Port Debilly. In between: Bateaux Parisiens from €99 for the 6:15 pm sitting and €115 for the 8:30 pm sitting with live entertainment; Bateaux Mouches from €90 at 6 pm and €99 at 8:30 pm (water only with that first menu); La Marina de Paris at Port de Solférino, below the Musée d'Orsay, with drinks extra; the Diamant Bleu and the Théo at Port de Passy; and the Capitaine Fracasse, with no dress code, at Port de Javel Haut.

Three questions really separate them: are drinks included, is a window seat guaranteed, is there a dress code. They are covered on Seine dinner cruise, then in more depth in budget dinner cruise, dinner cruise with live music and early dinner cruise.

Lunch and brunch on the water

At lunchtime the boats are less crowded, the light is better for photos and the prices are gentler. Bateaux Parisiens sails every day at 12:45 pm for two hours, from about €79 with drinks; Bateaux Mouches serves its "Douce France" lunch on weekends and public holidays, with an accordion player; La Marina de Paris leaves Solférino at 12:30 pm, from about €69.

On Sundays, the Capitaine Fracasse serves brunch while cruising (departs 12:30 pm, back 2:15 pm) and the Diamant Bleu has a gourmet brunch. Be careful with the Bateaux Mouches Sunday brunch, though: it is served at the quay, and the boat does not sail. Le Bistro Parisien, run by Bateaux Parisiens, is a restaurant on the quay that you pair with a one-hour cruise. Details, times and traps are on lunch and brunch cruises.

Drinks, champagne and snack cruises

Between the plain sightseeing cruise and dinner sits a family of one-hour cruises with something in your glass or on your plate. The best known: the Vedettes de Paris drinks-and-music cruise, the Champagne & Happy Hour cruise at Vedettes du Pont Neuf (a 7:15 pm departure and one at sunset), and the Ô Chateau tasting cruise, which boards at the Vedettes de Paris pontoon for three grower champagnes presented in English by a sommelier. There are also afternoon-snack and crêpe cruises.

One thing to watch: several "crêpe", "ice cream" or "waffle" cruises from the Eiffel Tower are put together by resellers, not by the boat companies themselves. That is not a problem in itself, but read what is included: a crêpe or a cookie and a drink, rarely more. Our Seine champagne cruise page compares what you actually drink for the price.

Private boat with a skipper

On the Seine inside Paris, a private boat always comes with a skipper: license-free boats are banned there. Expect €390 to €800 for an hour and a half for six people on a small boat, over €1,000 on a yacht. Paris Boat Club boards by default at the Escale de Beaugrenelle (nine passengers maximum, two hours from €449); Green River Cruises at Quai d'Austerlitz or at the foot of Pont Marie, with two bottles of wine included.

Several companies let you bring your own picnic and music, which makes a private boat for six or eight people a cheaper evening per head than a big dinner cruise. Cancellation terms are strict at some companies: check them before you pay. It is all on private Seine cruise, with two dedicated pages: proposal cruise and bachelorette and birthday cruise.

Batobus and bus + boat passes

The Batobus is not a narrated cruise but a river shuttle: nine stops (Tour Eiffel, Invalides, Musée d'Orsay, Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Notre-Dame, Jardin des Plantes, Hôtel de Ville, Louvre, Place de la Concorde), a loop of about two hours, and a 24-hour pass at €23 or a 48-hour pass at €27 on the company's website. A free audio guide is available on the web app. Wheelchair boarding is only possible at the Tour Eiffel stop.

Bus + boat deals are something else: the Big Bus pass includes a one-hour cruise with Bateaux Parisiens (pontoon 3), the Tootbus pass one hour with Vedettes de Paris (ticket valid fifteen days, no time slot to book). The Big Bus "48-Hour + River Cruise", on the other hand, gives you the Batobus. The comparison is on Batobus.

Canal Saint-Martin cruise

A change of scenery: locks, swing bridges, and a tunnel of about 2 km under Boulevard Richard-Lenoir and Bastille. Paris Canal links Port de Solférino (Musée d'Orsay) to the Parc de la Villette in 2h30, one-way, from about €25; Canauxrama, the sister company of Vedettes du Pont Neuf, runs from Port de l'Arsenal to the Bassin de la Villette, in either direction depending on the date, from about €23.

The canal has four double locks (nine chambers) and a 25 m climb: going up takes time, and that is the show. Plan to get back by metro, since the boat does not return to where you boarded. If you want to drive a license-free electric boat yourself, you have to go to the Bassin de la Villette, on the Ourcq canal. See Canal Saint-Martin cruise.

Museum + cruise combos

Combos bundle an entry ticket and a sightseeing cruise into one purchase; how each ticket can be used is spelled out in the offer. The most sensible pairings on the map: Orsay (three minutes on foot from Port de Solférino), the Musée du Quai Branly (seven minutes from Port de la Bourdonnais), and the Aquarium de Paris (six minutes from Port de Suffren). The Louvre, the Catacombs or the Moulin Rouge can also be paired with a cruise, but you will need to travel between the two.

Our rule: the museum by day, avoiding its closing day (Monday for Orsay, Tuesday for the Louvre), and the cruise late in the day. The pages combos, Eiffel Tower + cruise, Louvre + cruise and Orsay + cruise go through the offers and walking distances.

Holidays: Christmas, New Year's Eve, Valentine's Day, Bastille Day

Holiday dates have their own products, pricier, paid in full when you book and usually non-cancellable. On New Year's Eve, Bateaux Parisiens leaves at 9 pm for 3h30 with an orchestra; Bateaux Mouches is back at the quay at 11:15 pm and celebrates midnight moored. The same evening, Bateaux Parisiens also runs a 1h45 cruise with a festive box, with no fireworks. On Christmas Day, festive lunches and dinners book up early.

For Valentine's Day, Bateaux Mouches and Bateaux Parisiens have special menus around February 14. On the evening of the Bastille Day fireworks, Bateaux Mouches runs a dedicated dinner; Paris en Scène and the Capitaine Fracasse, on the other hand, do not serve dinner on Bastille Day itself. The whole calendar, with what you can really see from the boat, is on Christmas and New Year's Eve cruises.

Frequently asked questions

If I only take one Seine river cruise, which one should it be?

The one-hour narrated sightseeing cruise, late in the day. If you really want dinner, pick an 8:30 pm sitting in the warmer months to enjoy the daylight and then the illuminations.

Do all Seine cruises leave from the Eiffel Tower?

No. There are two piers at the Eiffel Tower (Bourdonnais and Suffren), but also Pont de l'Alma, Pont Neuf, Port de Solférino, Port de Passy, Port de Javel Haut, Port Debilly, Quai de Montebello and, for the canal, the Arsenal and La Villette.

Is the Batobus a cruise?

It is a hop-on hop-off shuttle with no guide: you get on and off at its nine stops for 24 or 48 hours. For commentary, take a one-hour sightseeing cruise.

Can I rent a boat without a license on the Seine?

Not in Paris: license-free boats are banned there. Private boats on the Seine come with a skipper; license-free rental is at the Bassin de la Villette.

Are prices lower on a booking platform?

Most of the time the platforms show the company's own online fare. The comparison tables on each page show the differences when there are any.
