How a museum and Seine river cruise combo works

A combo puts together two things that are also sold separately, entry to a venue and a boat ride, and a platform sells them in one payment. Depending on the listing you get two separate tickets or a voucher to exchange; the product page explains what you show at the museum entrance and at the ticket desk on the quay. That page is what counts, not the listing's title.

The cruise part is almost always the one-hour sightseeing cruise run by the big companies at the Eiffel Tower, the Pont de l'Alma or the Pont Neuf: the same boat and the same route as with a stand-alone ticket. Look for the company name on the product page, because it tells you which pier you board at.

You do not have to do both on the same day. The museum or monument usually sets a date and a time slot; the cruise ticket is often more open. Bateaux Parisiens and Bateaux Mouches, for instance, sell their sightseeing cruise on their own websites as an open-dated ticket valid for a year. The combo's product page states how long its own voucher is valid. For the cruise on its own and its timetable, see our one-hour cruise page.

In our view a combo makes sense in three situations: you want a single purchase for a full day, the monument's official site has no slots left on your date, or the combo genuinely costs less than the two tickets bought separately. Otherwise, two separate purchases leave you more freedom.

Time slots: what is dated and what isn't

The weak point of a combo is the monument, not the boat. The Eiffel Tower sells timed tickets online and opens sales about 60 days ahead; slots go fast in busy periods. The Louvre recommends booking a time slot and only sells tickets on site on quiet days. The Musée d'Orsay admits timed tickets through Entrance 1, on the river side. The Orangerie strongly recommends booking, the Catacombs recommend it just as firmly for paid tickets, and the Musée Picasso guarantees entry within 30 minutes of your slot.

On the boat side the rules are looser. The Bateaux Parisiens and Bateaux Mouches sightseeing cruises leave roughly every 30 to 45 minutes from morning to evening, and boarding is subject to space. Only meal cruises, the Bateaux Parisiens Notre-Dame cruise and some evening options are strictly dated and timed.

The method that works: book the monument slot first, since it shapes the day, then fit the cruise before or after, allowing for the walk to the quay. A sightseeing cruise lasts about an hour; add 15 to 20 minutes at the pier beforehand, plus the bag check at Bateaux Parisiens. Late in the day you will see daylight turn to night on the water: our Seine river night cruise page tells you which departure to pick by month.

Combo or two separate tickets: what you really save

To find out whether a combo is worth it, add up the venue's official price (full adult rate) and a one-hour cruise bought online, which is €17 at Bateaux Mouches or €18 at Bateaux Parisiens. Combo prices move around; the cards further down show today's price.

Venue Official entry (adult) + 1h cruise Separate total Combo, approx.
Panthéon €13 (winter), €16 (summer) €17 €30–33 €30
Musée Picasso €16 €17 €33 €31
Les Invalides (Army Museum) €17 €17 €34 €32
Quai Branly €14 €17 €31 €29
Aquarium de Paris €27.50 (counter) €17 €44.50 €36
Musée d'Orsay €16 online €17 €33 €42
Eiffel Tower, 2nd floor by elevator €23.50 €17 €40.50 €44 (guided tour)
Louvre €22 (EEA) / €32 (non-EEA) €17 €39–49 €58
Catacombs €31 (audio guide included) €17 €48 €90 and up
Petit Palais, Carnavalet free (permanent collections) €17 €17 €30

The picture is clear. For moderately priced museums (Panthéon, Picasso, Invalides, Quai Branly), the combo costs about the same as the two tickets, sometimes a couple of euros less: what you mostly gain is simplicity. The Aquarium is where the saving is clearest against the counter price. For Orsay, the Louvre and above all the Catacombs, the combo costs more than the sum; you are paying for availability, reserved entry or an included guided tour. For the Petit Palais and Carnavalet, whose permanent collections are free, a combo only makes sense if it includes a temporary exhibition: check the product page.

Two checks before you pay. Under-18s get in free at the Louvre, Orsay, Picasso and the Panthéon, and under-26s who live in the EU or the European Economic Area (EEA) get free entry at several of these museums: for them, only the boat needs paying for. Compare the platforms too: see GetYourGuide, Tiqets or Headout.

Every combo, monument by monument

Headout has the widest choice of museum + cruise combos, about twenty; GetYourGuide and Tiqets have fewer, but some are booked heavily, like the guided Louvre tour with a cruise. The table gives, for each venue, its closing day, the nearest pier on foot and the combos we track. The pier shown is the one nearest the venue: your combo's may be another, depending on the company.

Walking times from each venue to the pier

A good combo starts with a venue close to the water. We worked out walking times from each venue's entrance to the piers, along pedestrian routes. The shortest: Orsay is 3 minutes from the Port de Solférino, the Orangerie 6 minutes via the Léopold-Sédar-Senghor footbridge, the Aquarium 6 minutes from the Port de Suffren across the Pont d'Iéna, the Quai Branly and the Eiffel Tower 7 minutes from Bourdonnais, the Petit Palais 10 minutes from Alma.

The classic trap at the foot of the Eiffel Tower: the Port de la Bourdonnais (Bateaux Parisiens, pontoon 3) is upstream of the Pont d'Iéna, the Port de Suffren (Vedettes de Paris, under the three big flags) downstream. The two pontoons are neighbors but the bridge separates them, so check your combo's company before you head down to the quay. The full detail, summit or 2nd floor, is on our Eiffel Tower and Seine river cruise page.

In the center, the Square du Vert-Galant, at the tip of the Île de la Cité below the Pont Neuf, is the reference pier: 12 minutes from the Louvre, 20 minutes from the Paradis Latin, 21 minutes from the Panthéon, 27 minutes from the Musée Picasso or Carnavalet in the Marais. You reach it by a staircase from the Pont Neuf. Vedettes du Pont Neuf, which boards there, heads downstream first, toward the Eiffel Tower.

The two venues that are genuinely far away are the Catacombs, 37 minutes on foot from the Pont Neuf (Métro line 4 from Denfert-Rochereau to Cité or Châtelet shortens the trip), and the Moulin Rouge, with no pier at a reasonable walking distance. For those, build the journey into your plan. The Batobus, which stops at the Louvre, Orsay, Les Invalides and the Eiffel Tower, can link two visits: see our Batobus page. The map below lists every pier; access details are on the piers page.

Closing days: the Monday and Tuesday trap

Half of all failed combos come down to the date. The Louvre and the Orangerie close on Tuesdays, as does the Paradis Latin. Orsay, the Catacombs, the Musée Picasso, Carnavalet, the Petit Palais and the Quai Branly close on Mondays. The Eiffel Tower, Les Invalides, the Aquarium, the Panthéon and the Moulin Rouge open every day, apart from a few public holidays (January 1, May 1 and December 25 for most museums).

The boats sail every day: if your cruise ticket is flexible, do the museum one day and the boat another.

Late openings are the best chance to combine the two: the Louvre stays open until 9 pm on Wednesdays and Fridays, Orsay until 9:45 pm on Thursdays, the Quai Branly until 10 pm on Thursdays, the Orangerie until 9 pm on Fridays during exhibitions, Les Invalides until 10 pm on the first Friday of the month. A museum in the late afternoon, a cruise at nightfall, then the late opening: the day hangs together. The Louvre and Seine river cruise, Catacombs and cruise and Orsay and museums with a cruise pages give the hours venue by venue.

Our selection

Our picks, by type of visitor; today's prices and reviews are in the cards.

Our pick

1

The most logical

Orsay is three minutes from the Port de Solférino: you walk out of the museum and you are on the quay.

2

Eiffel Tower + boat

The guided elevator tour of the tower and a cruise from its foot, for a price close to the two separate tickets.

3

The cheapest

The Panthéon and a cruise for around €30, the same as the two official prices.

4

Catacombs

The cheapest Catacombs combo in our comparison, audio guide included.

5

Cabaret night

The Paradis Latin show and an hour on the Seine from the Eiffel Tower.

6

The Louvre with a guide

The most-booked combo in the category: a guided Louvre tour with reserved entry, then a cruise.

Cabaret, Notre-Dame, canal: the evening combos

Not every combo is a daytime affair. The Moulin Rouge and the Paradis Latin pair with a cruise or a dinner cruise in the evening: the Moulin Rouge plays every night at 9 pm and 11 pm, does not admit children under 6 and asks for smart casual dress. It has no pier within walking distance, which is why the listings that include transport are useful. The Paradis Latin, in the 5th arrondissement, is 20 minutes on foot from the Pont Neuf, with a show at 9:30 pm and no performance on Tuesdays. It is all explained on Moulin Rouge and Seine cruise.

The Notre-Dame combo pairs a guided tour of the cathedral's exterior with an evening cruise: you see the building from the square in front, then from the water. Finally, the Orsay + Seine and Canal Saint-Martin cruise combo takes half a day: the Paris Canal cruise leaves from the Port de Solférino, below Orsay, and travels up to the Bassin de la Villette in about 2h30, through the canal's locks. See Canal Saint-Martin.

Dinner cruises bundled with a show cost several hundred euros: compare with a Seine dinner cruise and a cabaret booked separately. Each major combo has its own detailed page below; the rest of the catalogue is on Seine river cruises, and the companies' price grids are on Seine river cruise tickets.

Frequently asked questions

Is a museum and Seine cruise combo cheaper than two tickets?

It depends on the venue. For the Panthéon, Picasso, Les Invalides or the Quai Branly, the price is about the same as two separate tickets. For the Aquarium, the combo is cheaper than the counter price. For Orsay, the Louvre and the Catacombs, it costs more: you are paying for availability or a guided tour.

Do I have to do the museum and the cruise on the same day?

Not necessarily. The museum or monument is usually dated and timed, the cruise often more flexible. Each combo's product page states how long the boat ticket is valid.

Where does the boat in a combo leave from?

From the pier of the company included in the combo: Port de la Bourdonnais or Port de Suffren at the Eiffel Tower, Port de la Conférence at the Pont de l'Alma, Square du Vert-Galant at the Pont Neuf. The company name is on the product page.

Which combo is the most convenient?

Orsay + cruise: the Port de Solférino is a three-minute walk from the museum entrance. The Quai Branly and the Aquarium, less than ten minutes from the Eiffel Tower pontoons, come right after.

Can I cancel a combo?

Cancellation terms depend on the listing and are shown before you pay. They vary from one listing to another, from refundable to no cancellation at all, so read the product page before booking.
