How we judge a Seine river dinner cruise

Our criteria can be checked. We look first at what you see: time on the water and the length of the route, then whether a seat against the window is guaranteed. Next, what is really included: wine, champagne or water only, because two menus at the same price can hide a €30 difference once the drinks are ordered. Then the atmosphere: live music or quiet, dress code or none. Finally the risk: can you cancel, by when, and what happens if the boat stays at the quay.

Platform ratings are not our main yardstick: they measure average satisfaction, not whether a boat fits your evening.

The prices quoted are the entry-level packages published by the companies; they move with the seasonal menus. The full comparison of restaurant boats, with times and menus, is on our Seine dinner cruise page. Here, we make the call.

The best dinner cruise in Paris overall: Bateaux Parisiens at 8:30 pm

Our first choice, for a first time in Paris, is still the Bateaux Parisiens 8:30 pm dinner, from Port de la Bourdonnais at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. Three reasons. It is the longest route on offer: 2h30, from the Bibliothèque nationale de France in the east to the Statue of Liberty on the Île aux Cygnes in the west, back at 11 pm. Kir and wine are included from the Étoile package up, starting at €115. And live musical entertainment accompanies the meal without drowning it out. Above that come Découverte from €139, Privilège from €185 with a table at the picture window, and up to €245 in Premier Baie Vitrée.

Two serious caveats. The booking is final and non-refundable under the terms of sale: only book if your date is fixed. And the dress code rules out jeans. If you want to be able to cancel, our second choice overall is the Bateaux Mouches Prestige menu at Alma (from €135, wine included, refunded if cancelled up to 72 hours ahead).

The best value: Paris en Scène, Wine package

To dine well on the water for under €80, Paris en Scène wins. The boat leaves from Port de Javel Haut, at the foot of the Pont Mirabeau (metro line 10 Javel-André Citroën, RER C Javel), at 7:15 pm or 9:45 pm, for 1h45 on the water. The menu comes in three parts — an amuse-bouche, a main course served in a cast-iron pot, and dessert, with a plant-based option — and the Wine package, from €72, adds a 37.5 cl bottle for two. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours ahead, which is rare at this price.

Why the Wine package rather than the Water package at €59? Because €13 for a shared half-bottle costs less than two glasses ordered on board elsewhere. The Champagne package (from €85) makes sense for an occasion.

Two challengers deserve a mention. The Bateaux Mouches Service 18h, at €90 with a bottle of wine for two, is the best deal on the big central boats, at the price of a short 1h15 cruise — see our early dinner cruise page. And Le Théo's Trattoria en Seine, at Port de Passy, from €69, is hard to beat for a relaxed evening with friends, with a rooftop terrace and no dress code. The detail is on our cheap dinner cruise page.

The best view from your table, for couples and first-timers

The view depends on two things: your seat and the route. On seating, only one boat gives a written guarantee: Bateaux Parisiens, in Privilège (tables for 2 to 4 against the picture window) and Premier Baie Vitrée (at the front, against the glass). That is our verdict for the view, and all the more so at 8:30 pm, on the longest route. At Bateaux Mouches, the Excellence menu gives priority seating near the windows, not a guarantee. Paris en Scène sells a "premium location" add-on, Le Diamant Bleu a VIP window table for €15, Le Théo for €10.

On the route, the Paris Seine company stages things carefully: departure from Orsay toward Notre-Dame, back past the Louvre and the Pont Alexandre III, a loop around the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower as the finale.

At night, the window turns into a mirror under the dining-room lights. The upper deck, open at Bateaux Mouches depending on river conditions, then gives the best view. It is all explained on our window seat page.

The best food: the Don Juan II, then Ducasse and Maxim's

If the plate comes first, the answer without hesitation is the Don Juan II from Yachts de Paris: five courses by Frédéric Anton, one Michelin star since 2022, €250 without drinks. It boards at Port Debilly, on the Right Bank facing the Eiffel Tower, Tuesday to Saturday: departure at 8:15 pm sharp, cruising until 10:30 pm, then a last drink at the quay. Smart dress required (no jeans, no sneakers), and no high chairs or kids' menu.

Second, Ducasse sur Seine, at 19 Port Debilly: a 100 % electric boat with the kitchen on board, four courses from €175 without drinks, leaving at 8:30 pm for two hours. Contrary to what you sometimes read, it has no Michelin star. Both of these tables can only be booked on their own websites.

Among the dinners bookable through our partners, we put Maxim's sur Seine first for food: a three-course menu by chef Olivier Dugue, a glass of champagne and amuse-bouches, in an Art Deco setting for 40 to 60 diners, from €145 to €165 depending on which official page you read. The Bateaux Parisiens Premier tiers follow closely. Our luxury dinner cruise page compares these addresses course by course.

The best music: Bateaux Mouches

For dinner with music, the prize goes to Bateaux Mouches at 8:30 pm: a violinist and a pianist play in the evening, and the dance floor is open to passengers. It leaves from Port de la Conférence, at the Pont de l'Alma on the Right Bank, with free parking during the cruise. Choose Prestige (wine included) or Excellence (champagne and priority seating): the €99 Découverte serves water only.

If you really want to dance, Le Diamant Bleu at Port de Passy is our alternative: a singer during dinner, then a DJ party at the quay after the cruise (except on the first Saturday sitting and on Sundays), with no dress code. Bateaux Parisiens at 8:30 pm, Maxim's (pianist-singer) and the Paris Seine Festif cruise (a singer, Belle Époque mood) complete the list.

To talk without raising your voice, Ducasse and the Don Juan II are all about calm. Our dinner cruise with live music page describes each atmosphere.

For a proposal: packages and small dining rooms

To pop the question, there are two dedicated options. Bateaux Mouches sells "Paris pour un Oui", a €360 proposal package on the 8:30 pm dinner: the most turnkey solution. Bateaux Parisiens offers a Wedding add-on — a cake to share, champagne, a printed photo and a preserved rose — to be added at least 48 hours ahead, only on the 8:30 pm departure. Paired with the Privilège service, it gets you the table for two against the window: that is our favorite combination. If you book through a platform, check with the company that the add-on can still be added.

For more privacy, Maxim's sur Seine, with its small rooms seating 40 and 60, feels less exposed than a big boat with several hundred seats. And for a true tête-à-tête, no dinner beats a small private boat with a skipper, timed for when the tower lights up: our guide to a proposal on the Seine compares the two options and explains how to aim for the sparkle.

The Eiffel Tower sparkles for five minutes at the start of every hour after dark, until at least 11 pm; on some evenings, especially in summer, it carries on later — check the tower's website for the day. No dinner guarantees it at a precise moment.

The traps that spoil the evening

The Bateaux Mouches Découverte at €99 looks like a bargain, but includes only water and no window guarantee. At Paris Seine, the standard menus are listed without drinks: expect €8 to €10 for a glass of wine. Le Bistro Parisien, the Bateaux Mouches brunch and the Son de la Terre dinner-concert stay at the quay, even when they are filed under "cruises".

On terms, Bateaux Parisiens refunds no booking, whereas Paris en Scène and Le Capitaine Fracasse let you cancel up to 24 hours ahead. On the platforms, cancellation terms depend on the listing and are shown before you pay. Finally, in winter a flood can suspend sailings for a few days: dinner is then served at the quay or postponed, depending on the company.

For other outings on the water, our overall ranking of which Seine river cruise is the best compares one-hour, night and family cruises.
