Theo Boat, Diamant Bleu, Green River Cruises Paris: small operators reviewed

Four small Seine companies that people constantly mix up: two restaurant boats run by one business at Port de Passy, Le Théo and Le Diamant Bleu, and two private-boat outfits, Green River Cruises and Paris Boat Club. Who does what, from where, and for how much.

Four names, two kinds of business

These four companies have little in common beyond their size, and the fact that they are so often confused. The first step is to split them into two groups.

On one side, two restaurant boats owned by the same company, based in Ivry-sur-Seine: Le Diamant Bleu, a large barge serving a French dinner with a live singer, and Le Théo, a smaller barge serving an Italian dinner under the name "Trattoria en Seine". Both board at the same quay, Port de Passy, and share one website, le-diamant-bleu.fr. The "Theo Boat" you see on booking platforms is that second boat; the old domain under its own name is no longer active.

On the other side, two outfits renting small private boats with a skipper: Green River Cruises, at the quai d'Austerlitz and at the foot of Pont Marie, and Paris Boat Club, at the Escale de Beaugrenelle. These are two separate businesses. The confusion comes from Green River's old website address, which now redirects to Paris Boat Club, even though Green River still trades under its own site.

One more name tends to come up: Pizza sur Seine. That floating pizzeria no longer exists; the Trattoria en Seine on Le Théo has replaced it. Be wary of any page that still offers it. Our Seine cruise operators page puts these four names back into the full list of companies on the river.

Port de Passy: boarding below the Maison de la Radio

Le Théo and Le Diamant Bleu board at Port de Passy, on the right bank, in the 16th arrondissement. The address the company gives is "Maison de la Radio, 2 rue du Ranelagh"; on the quay, follow the flags. The simplest way there is the RER C to Avenue du Président Kennedy – Maison de la Radio, then walk down from the RER bridge to the river.

Many guides get this quay wrong. You will sometimes read Port de Javel, quai d'Austerlitz or Bercy: those addresses are out of date or simply wrong. Javel, on the opposite bank, is the pier for Paris en Scène and Le Capitaine Fracasse; make sure you are on the right side of the river.

Port de Passy is downstream of the Eiffel Tower. So the boats head upstream toward the center first, pass the Eiffel Tower, and meet it again on the way back. Le Diamant Bleu lists a route past Notre-Dame, the Musée d'Orsay, the Louvre and the Grand Palais, with a finale in front of the lit-up Eiffel Tower. The quay is a long way from the big piers of the 7th arrondissement, so allow time to get there. Our Seine piers guide places it along the river.

Le Théo, the "Trattoria en Seine": an Italian dinner cruise

Le Théo is a 39-meter barge with a 130 m² indoor dining room and a 110 m² rooftop, which makes it one of the few restaurant boats where you can step up onto a real terrace for some air. The Italian dinner runs Tuesday to Sunday in two sittings: boarding at 6 pm, departure at 6:30 pm, back at 8:30 pm; then boarding at 9 pm, departure at 9:15 pm, back at 11:30 pm. Expect about two hours on the water.

The menu is pure trattoria: a pizzetta to start, a choice of pasta for the main (ravioli, ragù, truffle rigatoni and so on) and a pistachio tiramisù. On the company's website, adults pay €69 and children €49, with a dedicated kids' menu (spaghetti, tiramisù, juice). Half a bottle of water for two is included; other drinks are extra. Add-ons: a VIP window table for €10 more, a Spritz for €13. The atmosphere comes from recorded Italian music, not a live musician. No dress code. On Sunday lunchtime there is a two-hour Italian lunch from €59.

In our view this is the simplest and most relaxed dinner cruise in Paris, and one of the cheapest along with Paris en Scène: you come for a plate of pasta and the Seine, not for fine dining. The two platforms that sell it show similar prices; the table below compares them.

Le Diamant Bleu: the barge for a night with music

Le Diamant Bleu is a large yacht-style barge built in 2014: 400 seats while cruising, a 410 m² air-conditioned lounge with 34 panoramic windows and a 350 m² teak sun deck. Its "Croisière Gourmande" dinner runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, with boarding at 7:30 pm, departure at 8:15 pm and return at 11 pm, so roughly 2 hours 30 minutes on the water. On Saturdays there are two sittings: departures at 6 pm and at 10 pm.

The menu has three courses and changes three times a year; vegan, halal and gluten-free options are available. Only half a bottle of water for two is included. The company's website lists adults at €89 (its homepage says "from €79"); children at around €59, though the FAQ gives a different figure — confirm when you book. Add-ons: the Pétillante package with champagne for €40 more, a VIP window table for €15.

Its signature is the entertainment: a singer during dinner, then a DJ party at the dock after the cruise (except on the first Saturday sitting and on Sundays). No dress code. On Sundays, a buffet-style Brunch Gourmand with live cooking stations sails from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm, at €89 per adult. If music is your priority, our dinner cruise with live music page compares every option.

Green River Cruises Paris: private boats at quai d'Austerlitz and Pont Marie

Green River Cruises only does private charters: you do not buy a seat, the boat is for your group. The company uses electric boats, pontoon boats and what it calls "exceptional boats". In Paris it has two departure points: 36 quai d'Austerlitz (13th), at the foot of the Cité de la Mode et du Design, where the boat Playtime leaves from, and the quai de l'Hôtel de Ville, at the foot of Pont Marie (4th), where the barge Les Maquereaux is moored. The company also sails at Boulogne and Nogent-sur-Marne, for less. It does not board at Port de l'Arsenal, whatever some pages say.

For Paris, Green River Cruises lists prices from €55 per person, for 1 hour, 1 hour 30 or 2 hours, based on a minimum of six passengers. Two bottles of wine are included (champagne on the romantic packages), and you can bring your own food with no corkage fee. For a group of friends, it is in our view one of the cheapest ways to get a boat to yourselves.

On Headout, the Green River offer is a pontoon boat for 1 hour 30 minutes, for up to twelve people; the meeting point is on your voucher. Note that this offer can be neither cancelled nor rescheduled.

Paris Boat Club: Beaugrenelle, no partner

Paris Boat Club rents two Jeanneau Cap Camarat 7.5 boats, Ettore and Angelo, for up to nine passengers plus the skipper. On board: a sun canopy, a small cabin with a toilet, a fridge and a Bluetooth speaker for your own music. The default pier is the Escale de Beaugrenelle, in the 15th; the Louvre, Saints-Pères or Henri IV are possible on request.

The two-hour slots (12–2 pm, 2–4 pm, 4–6 pm, 6–8 pm) cost €449 for one to five passengers and €499 for up to seven, according to the company's price list. You bring whatever you want to eat and drink. Cancellation is free until midnight the day before. Children under 4 travel free but count as passengers.

We have no partner for Paris Boat Club: its boats are booked on its own website. If you would rather book through a platform, here are the small private boats closest to what it offers, and our private Seine cruise guide to compare.
