Closed Tuesdays, open late Wednesdays and Fridays

The Louvre is open from 9 am to 6 pm on Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, and until 9 pm on Wednesdays and Fridays. It is closed on Tuesdays, and on January 1, May 1 and December 25. Last entry is one hour before closing: 5 pm on ordinary days, 8 pm on late-opening evenings.

Tuesday is the most common combo trap. The museum offers no time slots that day, but picking the wrong date when you book is easy, especially when you are lining up several days of sightseeing. The boats, for their part, sail every day: Tuesday is a good day for the Seine, not for the museum.

The Wednesday and Friday late openings change things for a combo. A boat in the late afternoon, then the museum from 7 to 9 pm: in our view that is the best way to do both on the same day.

Booking a time slot is recommended, and the museum only sells tickets on site on quiet days. A combo with pre-booked entry takes care of that, as long as you pick the right day.

EEA or non-EEA fare: the price that changes the math

The Louvre has two adult fares: €22 for residents and citizens of the European Economic Area (the European Union plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), and €32 for everyone else, which includes visitors from the US, the UK, Canada and Australia. Entry is free for under-18s, and for EEA residents under 26. The audio guide costs €6 extra.

That double fare means the math depends on your passport. A non-EEA visitor pays €32 for entry and about €17 for a one-hour cruise bought online, so about €49 in all; an EEA resident pays €39. The cheapest combo with reserved entry runs around €58: the gap is modest for the first, wider for the second. Check on the product page whether the combo distinguishes between the two fares; if it does not, an EEA resident loses more.

For a family the reasoning often flips: children get into the museum free, but a combo may charge them for reserved entry. In that case, get the children's museum tickets on the official site, then buy the cruise separately: at Vedettes du Pont Neuf a child aged 4 to 12 pays about €7 online. The fares of the four big companies are gathered on our Seine river cruise tickets page.

Guided tour or plain entry: the Louvre combos

The most-booked combo in the category, on GetYourGuide, pairs a guided Louvre tour with reserved access and a cruise, for about €85. Headout sells pre-booked entry plus a cruise, around €58, for people who would rather explore on their own. In between, a semi-private Louvre tour carries on with the Vedettes du Pont Neuf guided cruise, from the Square du Vert-Galant, right next door.

Then come the packages with a meal: a guided Louvre tour and a lunch cruise, or a guided tour and a dinner cruise. They take up a whole day or a whole evening; the product page names the boat company, and so the pier and the dress code. If the dinner is with Bateaux Parisiens, be aware that jeans, sneakers and shorts are not allowed. The "Paris in a day" packages (the Louvre or Orsay, the Eiffel Tower, a walk and a cruise) suit very short stays, at the cost of a brisk pace.

Be wary of poorly rated listings: a Louvre, Eiffel Tower and cruise combo, or an audio guide with an optional cruise, show low scores on very few reviews. Cancellation terms depend on each listing and are shown before you pay.

From the Louvre to the boat: the nearest piers

The pier closest to the Louvre belongs to Vedettes du Pont Neuf, at the Square du Vert-Galant, at the downstream tip of the Île de la Cité: about 900 m and 12 minutes on foot from the Pyramid, along the quai du Louvre to the Pont Neuf. You go down to the square by a staircase from the bridge; in a wheelchair, access is via the ramp at 36 quai des Orfèvres and a cobbled quay, and the company admits that access is difficult.

The Vedettes du Pont Neuf cruise lasts an hour, with a live guide in French and English and an app in other languages. It heads downstream first, to the Eiffel Tower, then comes back around the islands. Expect to pay about €15 online for an adult. Our full review: Vedettes du Pont Neuf.

The second option is the Batobus, whose "Louvre" stop is right below the museum, on the quai du Louvre. The 24-hour pass, around €23, takes you to Orsay, Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Notre-Dame or the Eiffel Tower; it is not a guided cruise but a shuttle. See our Batobus page. The Port de Solférino, below Orsay, is about 16 minutes' walk across the Léopold-Sédar-Senghor footbridge. The Eiffel Tower and Alma pontoons are more than 35 minutes away: take the Métro or the Batobus.

How to build a good Louvre and Seine day

Three plans work, depending on the day. The first, on an ordinary day: the Louvre from opening at 9 am, three hours inside, lunch, then the afternoon cruise from the Vert-Galant. The boat rests your legs after miles of galleries; this is the order we recommend.

The second, on a Wednesday or Friday: the cruise at nightfall, then the late opening. In winter it is dark before 6 pm, so a 5 pm boat is already a night cruise; from April to September it gets dark too late to fit both in, so it is better to do the museum first, then an evening boat. Our Seine river night cruise page tells you which departure to pick by month.

The third: a combo with a dinner cruise, the guided tour in the afternoon and the boat at 6 pm or 8:30 pm depending on the company. Allow for the trip to the dinner pier, which is not necessarily at the Pont Neuf: the big dinner cruises leave from the Eiffel Tower or the Alma, more than half an hour away. The options are compared on our Seine dinner cruise page.

Whatever you choose, do not plan the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower for the same morning: with two fixed time slots, the slightest delay costs you the second. Our Eiffel Tower and Seine river cruise page covers the tower separately, and every museum + boat pairing is on museum and cruise combos.

Frequently asked questions

Which day should I avoid for a Louvre and Seine cruise combo?

Tuesday, when the museum is closed. The boats sail every day: do the museum on another day if your cruise ticket allows it.

How much is entry to the Louvre?

€22 for EEA residents, €32 for everyone else, free for under-18s and for EEA residents under 26. A combo with reserved entry and a cruise starts at about €58.

What is the nearest pier to the Louvre?

The Square du Vert-Galant, below the Pont Neuf, 12 minutes on foot: it is the Vedettes du Pont Neuf pier. The Batobus also has a "Louvre" stop on the quai du Louvre.

Can I do the Louvre in the evening and then a cruise?

Yes, on Wednesdays and Fridays, when the museum closes at 9 pm. In winter, take the boat first, at nightfall, then go to the late opening.

Is a combo cheaper than two tickets?

Rarely for the Louvre. You are mostly paying for the reserved slot or the guided tour. For an EEA resident, two separate tickets often work out cheaper.
