Le Bistro Parisien review: Eiffel Tower dinner and Seine cruise

Le Bistro Parisien is Bateaux Parisiens' restaurant on the quay, at pontoon 2 of Port de la Bourdonnais: it never leaves the dock, but it is sold with the one-hour narrated Seine river cruise, a way to dine facing the Eiffel Tower and then see Paris from the water for far less than a dinner cruise.

A restaurant that stays put and a one-hour cruise next door: what the combination is worth, what it costs and what to know about the packages. The Bistro belongs to Bateaux Parisiens; to see how it compares with the rest, see our Seine cruise companies page.

A restaurant on the quay, not a boat

Le Bistro Parisien is a restaurant on the quay: a contemporary glass-walled building with a terrace, set on pontoon 2 of Port de la Bourdonnais, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. It belongs to Bateaux Parisiens, the Sodexo Live! company that runs the cruises next door. Chef Cyril Paysserand runs the kitchen; the dining room looks out on the Eiffel Tower and the river. Service runs nonstop from noon to 10 pm, and the Bistro can be booked for private events.

The key point, and a source of confusion on the booking platforms: the Bistro does not sail. Listings called "dinner cruise at Le Bistro Parisien" combine a meal at the restaurant, on land, with the one-hour narrated cruise of Bateaux Parisiens, on a different boat, at the next pontoon. You do not eat on the water.

The offer comes down to three things. The à la carte meal, with no cruise. The lunch or dinner + narrated cruise packages, the real product on this page. And, on GetYourGuide, a Christmas Eve dinner at the Bistro with music and a cruise, detailed on the listing.

Do not confuse it with Madame Brasserie either, the restaurant on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower: its pairing with a cruise exists only as a platform product, not at Bateaux Parisiens.

The cruise route: the Bateaux Parisiens loop

The cruise included is the one-hour narrated cruise of Bateaux Parisiens, from pontoon 3, a few steps from the Bistro. It heads upstream, east: Les Invalides, the Assemblée nationale, the Musée d'Orsay, the Institut de France, Île de la Cité with the Conciergerie and Notre-Dame, as far as Île Saint-Louis, where the boat turns. The return leg follows the right bank, past the Hôtel de Ville, the Louvre, Place de la Concorde, the Grand Palais and the Palais de Chaillot, back to the Eiffel Tower.

In an hour you pass under about 20 bridges, not under all of the 37 that Paris has. The Statue of Liberty on Île aux Cygnes is not promised on this cruise: the company's pages contradict each other about it. When the river is in flood, the route can change without notice.

It is a short route compared with the Bateaux Parisiens dinner cruises: the 8:30 pm dinner sails for two and a half hours and goes all the way to the Bibliothèque nationale de France. With the Bistro you get the classic loop, the one every one-hour cruise from the Eiffel Tower follows. The monuments, bank by bank, are on our what you see from the Seine page.

The setting: the restaurant and the sightseeing boats

The Bistro itself is a glass-walled dining room with a terrace, right by the water, facing the tower. It has free Wi-Fi, like all the company's pontoons, and wheelchair-accessible restrooms. Staff will warm a baby bottle, which is not possible on the sightseeing boats.

The cruise uses the Bateaux Parisiens sightseeing fleet: glass-roofed trimarans with a terrace and outside walkways, and smaller launches. You do not get to pick your boat: it is assigned according to how full the departure is. Your seat is guaranteed, but it may be on the heated, glassed-in lower deck or on the open upper deck, which fills up fast in summer. Every boat has restrooms.

The restaurant and the boats are non-smoking. Pets are not allowed, except guide and assistance dogs. Bags are checked and suitcases refused, with no left-luggage on site: drop yours at the hotel first. On dress, the company's strict rules (no jeans, no sneakers) apply to its meals on board; for the Bistro we found none published — if in doubt, ask when you book.

Prices: the old official rate, the platforms and the menu

This is where you need to read the labels. On an older company page, the "lunch or dinner on the quay + narrated cruise" packages were listed at €45.50 per adult and €19 per child, for two courses (starter and main, or main and dessert), with a higher tier around €75 whose details we did not see. We could not access the current page for these packages: treat those figures as a guide only, not today's price. À la carte, meals start at around €48.

On our three partner platforms, the package on sale is described as three courses, around €66 in the evening and about €60 at lunch. So it is not the same menu as the old two-course package. Before comparing prices, compare the number of courses and the drinks included, which are on each listing.

For perspective: the Bateaux Parisiens lunch cruise starts at €79 and the 6:15 pm dinner cruise at €99 on the company's website, drinks included, but with the meal served on board. The Bistro costs less because you eat on land. Our cheap Seine dinner cruise and Seine lunch cruise pages put those gaps in context.

Booking and getting there: pontoon 2, then pontoon 3

On site. The Bistro is at pontoon 2 of Port de la Bourdonnais, 75007, on the left bank, upstream of Pont d'Iéna; the cruise boards at pontoon 3, right next door. Take Métro Bir-Hakeim (line 6) or Trocadéro (6, 9), RER C to Champ de Mars–Tour Eiffel, or buses 42, 69, 82 and 87. Drivers are pointed to the public car park of the Musée du Quai Branly. Do not confuse it with Port de Suffren, on the other side of Pont d'Iéna, where Vedettes de Paris boards.

Times. According to the old package pages, lunch is at noon and dinner at 6:30 pm; the Bistro serves dinner every day from 6 pm. The cruise time and whether it comes before or after the meal are given on each listing: read them before you pay.

Cancelling. Bateaux Parisiens' terms and conditions say every booking is "final, non-cancellable" and non-refundable; a date change is sometimes accepted by phone, possibly for a fee. On a platform, the conditions depend on the listing and are shown before you pay: it is often the way to keep some flexibility.

The experience: lunch or dinner

Lunch and the cruise

At lunchtime the package has one simple advantage: the light. The afternoon cruise shows the facades, the quays and Notre-Dame in full daylight, and the meal on the terrace is taken facing the tower. This is the one to pick with kids: the narrated cruise has a child fare for ages 4 to 11, and the old child package cost far less than the adult one.

Dinner and the evening cruise

In the evening, the point is to do the cruise after dark. The Eiffel Tower sparkles for five minutes at the start of every hour after dark, until at least 11 pm; on some evenings, especially in summer, it carries on later — check the tower's website for the day. In summer, night falls late (see our Seine sunset cruise table): if the cruise follows a 6:30 pm dinner, it will be in broad daylight, while in winter it will be after dark. Details: Eiffel Tower sparkle.

The commentary

On board there is a wired audio guide on the lower deck, in about 14 languages, backed by a hostess on the microphone; a web app takes over on your phone if you bring earphones. No live guide.

Who Le Bistro Parisien suits best

Tight budgets that want a meal and a cruise. As far as we know, it is one of the cheapest ways to dine facing the Eiffel Tower and see Paris from the water on the same evening, as long as you are happy to eat on land.

Families. A restaurant on land, accessible restrooms, baby bottles warmed, a short cruise: simpler with kids than a two-and-a-half-hour dinner on board. See also our Seine cruise with kids page.

Travelers in a hurry. The meal and the cruise fit into a reasonable evening, without the two and a half hours of a full dinner on board.

Skip it if you dream of dinner on the water: book a real Seine dinner cruise. Skip it too if you want a live guide (the audio guide is recorded) or want to be able to cancel with the company.
