Seine River Night Cruise: Paris Lit Up from the Water

Four companies run their boats after nightfall, for a little under €20 an hour: Bateaux Parisiens and Vedettes de Paris at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, Bateaux Mouches at the Pont de l'Alma, Vedettes du Pont Neuf at the tip of the Île de la Cité. Which departure works best depends mostly on the month.

A night cruise is the same loop in a different light

Most of the time, a Seine river night cruise is not a separate product. It is the one-hour sightseeing cruise the companies run all day, on the same route and often on the same ticket. At both Bateaux Parisiens and Bateaux Mouches the sightseeing ticket is open-dated: it is good for any departure for a year, at 9 pm just as at 11 am. Vedettes du Pont Neuf works the same way, and its evening boats are simply later runs of its regular guided cruise.

What changes is what you see: the Conciergerie and the Hôtel de Ville floodlit, the clocks of the Musée d'Orsay, the lamps along the Pont Alexandre III and, above all, the Eiffel Tower, which turns gold at nightfall and then sparkles at the start of every hour. In our view, this is the best time of day for a first Paris boat tour.

One naming point that helps when you read French signs and reviews: in French, "bateau-mouche" is a loose word for any sightseeing boat, while Bateaux Mouches® is also the name of one specific company at the Pont de l'Alma. We keep the two apart. The bridge-by-bridge route is on our one-hour cruise page, and every type of trip is on our Seine river cruises overview.

Who sails at night, and how late, by season

The four big sightseeing companies sail all year, with a heated lower deck and an open upper deck. Their evening timetables move with the seasons: a 10:30 pm summer departure does not exist in January, and a 6 pm boat in January already sails in full darkness.

Company Pier Last boats, spring–summer Last boats, winter In the evening
Bateaux Parisiens Port de la Bourdonnais, pontoon 3 10:30 pm April–September; 11 pm on weekends and daily in July–August 10 pm October–March; 10:30 pm on weekends and in French school holidays audio guide in about 14 languages + hostess
Bateaux Mouches Port de la Conférence, Pont de l'Alma 10 pm April–October; an extra 10:30 pm on Saturdays in October 9:30 pm November–March; 10 pm in school holidays onboard commentary
Vedettes de Paris Port de Suffren Apéro & Musicale cruise, roughly 7–10:30 pm, later in high season same cruise, times in the booking calendar no guide, a playlist of French songs
Vedettes du Pont Neuf Square du Vert-Galant last boat around 10:30 pm around 9:30–10 pm live guide, French and English

Two details save disappointment. From April to September, Bateaux Parisiens leaves roughly every 30 minutes but skips the 7:30 pm slot, so aim for 7 or 8 pm. And at Vedettes de Paris, the musical apéritif replaces the guided cruise in the evening: if you want commentary, board somewhere else. These are the times the companies publish; a winter flood can change them, so check on the day.

The Eiffel Tower departure, compared on three platforms

The Bateaux Parisiens evening cruise is the easiest to plan: one hour, leaving from and returning to the Port de la Bourdonnais (pontoon 3, upstream of the Pont d'Iéna). The boat heads upstream first toward the Île Saint-Louis, turns, and comes back past the Hôtel de Ville, the Louvre, the Place de la Concorde and Chaillot. On the company's website an adult ticket is €18 online and €20 at the counter, €9 online for a child aged 4 to 11, free under 4. Suitcases are refused: only small bags get through the security check.

The partner platforms sell this departure at the company's own price, as the table below shows. The ticket is non-refundable but stays valid for a year, so if it rains on the evening you planned, you go the next night. Our Bateaux Parisiens review covers accessibility and the other cruises.

With a drink: apéritif, champagne and happy hour

The best-selling evening option is the Apéro & Musicale cruise from Vedettes de Paris at the Port de Suffren, downstream of the Pont d'Iéna: one hour, a playlist of French songs instead of a guide, from €22 on the company's website (€25 at the counter). Drinks are paid for on board by card; the champagne option takes the ticket to €38, wine or beer to €32. The fleet is electric, with one hybrid boat.

Vedettes du Pont Neuf runs a Champagne & Happy Hour cruise at €29 online with one drink included, every evening at 7:15 pm and on a sunset departure. From April to September, Bateaux Parisiens also sails from the Quai de Montebello, facing Notre-Dame, for its Notre-Dame & Champagne cruise: 5 pm, 7 pm, 8:30 pm and 10 pm, a live guide in French and English, one glass and a biscuit, €39 per adult. That ticket is dated and non-cancellable, and this departure is not wheelchair accessible. All of these are compared on our champagne cruise page.

Dinner instead of sightseeing: the evening alternatives

Seine dinner cruises also leave after 6 pm and pass the same floodlit monuments, only more slowly. The reference points published on the companies' websites:

  • Bateaux Parisiens, Port de la Bourdonnais: 6:15 pm (1h15) from €99, 8:30 pm (2h30, live music) from €115, wine included; jeans and sneakers not allowed.
  • Bateaux Mouches, Pont de l'Alma: 6 pm from €90, 8:30 pm from €99 on the Découverte menu, water only.
  • Paris en Scène, Port de Javel Haut: 7:15 pm and 9:45 pm, 1h45 on the water, from €59 with water.
  • Le Théo, Port de Passy: Italian food at 6:30 pm and 9:15 pm, around €69.

On a tight budget, the usual compromise is still the one-hour cruise followed by dinner on land, or the package from Le Bistro Parisien, the Bateaux Parisiens restaurant on the quay, paired with a one-hour cruise. Our Seine dinner cruise and cheap dinner cruise pages compare them.

What you see once night falls

From the Eiffel Tower and Alma piers, boats head upstream first. Facing the bow, the Right Bank is on your left: the Palais de Chaillot, the glass roof of the Grand Palais, the obelisk on the Place de la Concorde, the long façade of the Louvre. On your right you pass the dome of Les Invalides lined up with the Pont Alexandre III, the Assemblée nationale, the Orsay clocks and the cupola of the Institut de France. Then come the Conciergerie, Notre-Dame, the Hôtel de Ville and the Île Saint-Louis before the boat turns; on the way back, everything swaps sides.

The Eiffel Tower is the highlight of the evening. Its golden lighting, 336 floodlights installed in 1985, switches on automatically at nightfall, along with the beacon added in 1999; the sparkle comes from 20,000 flashing bulbs. On summer evenings Bateaux Mouches also points out the Olympic cauldron above the Tuileries.

For photos, go up to the top deck and stand at the back, where you can switch sides without blocking anyone. The heated lower deck is more comfortable in winter, but its windows reflect the cabin lights. The full detail is on our what you see from the Seine page.

The Eiffel Tower sparkle, on the hour every hour

The Eiffel Tower sparkles for five minutes at the start of every hour from nightfall until at least 11 pm; on some evenings, especially in summer, the sparkling carries on later. The day's schedule is on the tower's own website.

The first sparkle happens on the first full hour after dark: if night falls at 8:35 pm, the golden lights come on within about ten minutes and the tower sparkles at 9 pm. No company publishes a timetable built around the show or promises it. In practice, a departure 20 to 25 minutes before the hour from Bourdonnais or Suffren usually has the tower in view right on the hour. In summer, the 11 pm sparkle is often the only one you can count on, so aim for the last Bateaux Parisiens departures. Our Eiffel Tower sparkle page shows where the boat is on the hour from each pier.

Local times computed for Paris (NOAA algorithm, ±2 min). The Eiffel Tower sparkles for 5 minutes at the top of every hour from nightfall, the last time at 23:00; in summer darkness comes so late that the first sparkle waits until 22:00 or 23:00.

The best season for a Seine night cruise

It all comes down to when it gets dark. From November to January the sun sets before 6 pm, at the earliest around 4:54 pm in mid-December: a 5:30 pm boat already sails in the dark and the sparkles keep coming all evening. It is the easiest season for a night cruise, as long as you accept the cold on the open deck. Winter floods occasionally suspend cruises for a few days.

In June and July full darkness only comes after 10:30 pm, so only the last departures are truly at night. April–May and August–September are the best months in our view: the sun sets between 8 pm and 9:30 pm, and a single departure sees the daylight fade and then the city light up. September often gives you both in one hour, with sunset around 8 pm and the first sparkle around 9 pm. August is the busiest month, so book your evening ahead. Our guide to how long and when to go pulls these markers together.

Night cruise tickets: booking, cancelling, boarding

Conditions vary from one company to the next. At Bateaux Parisiens and Bateaux Mouches the sightseeing ticket is non-refundable but valid for a year. Vedettes de Paris lets you cancel or change your time for free up to 24 hours before for a timed ticket bought online. Vedettes du Pont Neuf refunds 80 % more than 48 hours ahead, 60 % between 24 and 48 hours, nothing after that. On the platforms, cancellation terms depend on the listing and are shown before you pay.

Sunset and weekend departures fill up first. For wheelchair users, Vedettes de Paris is the best equipped (a ramp down from the Pont de Bir-Hakeim, a dedicated space on board); Bateaux Parisiens takes a limited number, so mention it when you book. Each quay is described on our Seine piers page.

What time should I go for a Seine river cruise at night?

After dusk has fully ended, which runs from around 5:30 pm in December to 10:40 pm at the end of June. In winter a 6 pm departure is enough; in June and July only the 10:30 pm or 11 pm boats are truly in the dark.

Does a night cruise cost more than a daytime one?

No, the one-hour cruise costs the same: from €17 online at Bateaux Mouches, €18 at Bateaux Parisiens and €15 at Vedettes du Pont Neuf on the companies' websites. Only the cruises with a drink cost a little more.

Will I see the Eiffel Tower sparkle?

Very likely if you sail after dark: it sparkles for five minutes at the start of every hour from nightfall until at least 11 pm. No company guarantees it on a specific departure.

Which evening cruise has a live guide?

Vedettes du Pont Neuf, at the Square du Vert-Galant, and the Bateaux Parisiens Notre-Dame & Champagne cruise from April to September. The Vedettes de Paris apéritif cruise has no guide.
