"Which Seine river cruise is the best?" has no single answer, and you should be wary of rankings that claim one. The big companies run almost the same one-hour loop between the Eiffel Tower and Île Saint-Louis; what sets them apart is the pier, the style of commentary, the size of the boat, the evening schedule and how flexible the ticket is. So rather than a podium, we have built a ranking by situation, with our reasons. Three sub-pages go deeper on specific cases: the best night cruise, the best dinner cruise and the best Seine cruise for families. Every offer is on the guide's home page.

How we rank: reviews, price, pier, route, boat

We start with what can be measured. First, review volume on the partner platforms: a cruise rated 4.4 by tens of thousands of travelers tells you more than a 4.9 from thirty. The ratings of the big offers sit very close together, between 4.2 and 4.7, so it is the number of reviews, and how steady the rating is, that separates them. We know this favors long-running offers and big boats, and we correct for it with the next four criteria.

Official price: we compare the adult fare published on each company's own website, online and at the ticket window, and check that it is the same on the platforms. Pier: leaving from the Eiffel Tower, Pont de l'Alma or the Pont Neuf changes your Métro ride and the order in which you see the monuments. Route: a one-hour loop passes under about twenty bridges, but some dinners go as far as the Bibliothèque nationale or the Statue of Liberty. And finally the boat: open upper deck, covered and heated deck, restrooms, step-free access.

A word on how we make money: partner platforms pay us a commission when you book through our links, at no extra cost to you. We also name boats that earn us nothing, such as Le Calife, Ducasse sur Seine or the Don Juan II, when they are the right answer.

Best Seine river cruise for a first visit: one hour from the Eiffel Tower

Our first choice for someone discovering Paris is the narrated cruise run by Bateaux Parisiens, at Port de la Bourdonnais, pontoon 3, upstream of Pont d'Iéna. It is the most reviewed offer in our whole catalog, and it earns that for very concrete reasons. From April to September, boats leave about every 30 minutes from 10 am to 10:30 pm, until 11 pm on weekends and every day in July and August. Commentary comes through an audio guide in about 14 languages, with a host on board. The online ticket costs €18 (€20 at the window), €9 for a child aged 4 to 11, and it is not dated: it stays valid for a year.

That last point is the real advantage on a first trip. If it rains, you simply go another day without asking anyone. The boat first heads up the Seine toward Notre-Dame and Île Saint-Louis, turns around, and comes back down past the Hôtel de Ville, the Louvre and Place de la Concorde.

It has its drawbacks: lines at busy times, bag checks, suitcases turned away, no refunds. If you prefer a human guide, Vedettes de Paris, just downstream of Pont d'Iéna at Port de Suffren, is the alternative: a live guide in French and English, same online price. The head-to-head between the four sightseeing companies is on our one-hour Seine cruise page.

Best Seine river cruise at night: a drink or the last departure

In the evening, our pick depends on what you are after. For atmosphere, the Vedettes de Paris Apéro & Musicale cruise, at Port de Suffren, is the most reviewed evening cruise in our catalog: one hour, a playlist of French songs instead of a guide, from €22 on the company's website, drinks sold on board. For commentary and late departures, the last Bateaux Parisiens boat, at 10:30 pm or 11 pm depending on the season, sails in full darkness even in June.

What matters at night is the time of nightfall, not the company. The Eiffel Tower sparkles for five minutes at the start of every hour after dark, until at least 11 pm; on some evenings, especially in summer, it carries on later — check the tower's website for the day. No company guarantees the show, but a boat that leaves 20 to 25 minutes before the hour usually has the tower in view at the right moment.

The price does not change: a night cruise costs the same as a daytime one. In our opinion, it is the best deal on the water in Paris. The full ranking of evening cruises, dinners included, is on the best Seine night cruise.

Best Seine river dinner cruise: the Bateaux Parisiens 8:30 pm sitting

For dinner on the Seine, our first choice is the Bateaux Parisiens 8:30 pm sitting: 2h30 on the water, back at 11 pm, live music, wine included from the Étoile menu at €115 on the company's website. It is also the best-rated dinner among the big offers. The route runs from the Bibliothèque nationale to the Statue of Liberty, further than a sightseeing loop. Two caveats: a window seat is guaranteed only with the Privilège or Premier Baie Vitrée menus, and the booking can be neither canceled nor refunded. Jeans are not allowed.

The most booked dinner in our catalog, though, is Paris en Scène, at Port de Javel Haut, with thousands of reviews: 1h45 on the water, two sittings (7:15 pm and 9:45 pm), from €59 with water, €72 with wine. At Bateaux Mouches, the 8:30 pm dinner at Pont de l'Alma comes with a violinist and a pianist, but the €99 Découverte menu includes water only.

At the top end, the Don Juan II, at Port Debilly, is the restaurant boat with a Michelin star (€250 before drinks, Tuesday to Saturday); you book it directly with the company. The detail is on the best Seine dinner cruise and the full comparison on Seine dinner cruise.

Best Seine river cruise for families: a live guide and a flexible ticket

With children, we put Vedettes de Paris at Port de Suffren first, for three reasons. The guide speaks live, in French and English, which holds attention better than an audio guide. The pier can be reached by a ramp from Pont de Bir-Hakeim, handy with a stroller. And a timed ticket bought online can be canceled or moved for free up to 24 hours before. The company also runs a family cruise for ages 6–13, with puzzles and a captain's certificate.

Bateaux Parisiens comes a close second: restrooms on every boat, very frequent departures and a ticket valid for a year, useful when nap time runs over. Bateaux Mouches has the widest child band (through age 12) and its big open decks suit kids who want to see everything. Vedettes du Pont Neuf is the cheapest, but you reach its quay down a two-story staircase.

Age bands change everything: a 12-year-old pays the full fare at Bateaux Parisiens and Vedettes de Paris, but not at Bateaux Mouches. Our detailed ranking, with the budget for a family of four, is on the best Seine cruise for families; practical advice (babies, strollers, snacks) is on Seine cruise with kids.

On a budget: Pont Neuf by day, Javel Haut in the evening

The lowest fare among the four sightseeing companies belongs to Vedettes du Pont Neuf: €15 online (€17 on site), €7 for a child aged 4 to 12, with a live guide in French and English. The pier, Square du Vert-Galant, sits at the tip of Île de la Cité, below the Pont Neuf: if you are staying in the Latin Quarter, the Marais or near the Louvre, you also save the trip to the Eiffel Tower. Unlike the others, the boat heads downstream first, toward the Eiffel Tower. The upper deck is open, the cabin heated.

The Batobus is not a narrated cruise but a €23 24-hour pass serving nine stops, from the Eiffel Tower to the Jardin des Plantes. If you plan to string together Orsay, the Louvre and Notre-Dame in a day, it replaces a few Métro rides on top of the cruise itself.

To have dinner for under €60 a head, Paris en Scène is still the simplest option, with water only. Le Théo, at Port de Passy, serves an Italian menu at around €69. Our price benchmarks are on Seine river cruise tickets and prices and budget Seine dinner cruise.

For couples: a late dinner, a glass facing Notre-Dame or a small boat

For a couple, we choose the second Paris en Scène sitting, at 9:45 pm (boarding 9:30 pm, back 11:30 pm): you eat once the city is already lit, almost all year round, and the Champagne package (from €85, a 37.5 cl half-bottle for two) stays below the price of the big names. A paid option guarantees a premium seat. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before, which is not the case at Bateaux Parisiens.

From April to September, Bateaux Parisiens also runs a one-hour cruise from Quai de Montebello, facing Notre-Dame, with a glass of champagne and a live guide in French and English, at 5 pm, 7 pm, 8:30 pm and 10 pm, for €39 per adult. The ticket is dated and non-cancelable, and this departure is not wheelchair accessible.

To be truly on your own, you need a private boat with a skipper: expect about €390 to €800 for an hour and a half and up to six people on a small boat. It is also the simplest way to set up a proposal. See Seine champagne cruise, private Seine cruise and proposal cruise on the Seine.

Best Seine river cruise from Paris to Normandy: not a sightseeing boat

Many American and British readers asking for "the best Seine river cruise" have something else in mind: a week-long river cruise on a floating hotel, from Paris to Normandy. It has nothing in common with a one-hour sightseeing loop. These itineraries usually run 7 nights round trip from Paris, with Giverny, Rouen and, depending on the line, Honfleur or Le Havre.

The furthest point is what separates the lines. Scenic, Emerald, CroisiEurope and Riviera Travel moor at Honfleur; AmaWaterways, Tauck, nicko cruises and A-ROSA go as far as Le Havre; Viking turns around at Rouen and Uniworld at Caudebec-en-Caux. Prices vary enormously and depend on the market: on their websites, Viking starts at about $2,799 for US residents, CroisiEurope at €1,659 for eight days, Scenic at €4,695 all-inclusive. Drinks and gratuities are included with some lines only.

We have no partner for these cruises: we compare them and send you to book with the lines themselves. Our comparison of twelve lines, port by port, is on Seine river cruises to Normandy, and the Normandy stops are on Rouen and Honfleur.

Keep three traps in mind as you read it. The two Eiffel Tower pontoons are neighbors but separated by Pont d'Iéna: Bateaux Parisiens upstream, Vedettes de Paris downstream. Paris en Scène and Le Capitaine Fracasse both board at Port de Javel Haut, at the foot of Pont Mirabeau, a long way from the tower. And Paris Seine, La Marina de Paris and Maxim's sur Seine are three brands of a single company, at Port de Solférino, below the Musée d'Orsay. In French, "bateau-mouche" means any sightseeing boat; Bateaux-Mouches® is only the company at Pont de l'Alma. Our overview of the companies gives each one its own review.

What doesn't decide it: the platform and the number of bridges

Two arguments come up often and should not weigh on your choice. The first is the platform. On most of the cruises we follow, GetYourGuide, Tiqets and Headout show the company's own online fare: the one-hour Bateaux Parisiens cruise costs €18 everywhere, as the table below shows. What changes from one offer to another are the cancellation terms, shown before you pay, and sometimes the service included. We do not claim that any platform is always cheaper.

The second is the route. No sightseeing cruise passes under all 37 bridges of Paris: a one-hour loop goes under about twenty, and the four big companies see the same monuments. None of them promises the Statue of Liberty on the one-hour cruise; only some dinners, such as the Bateaux Parisiens 8:30 pm sitting, Paris Seine or Le Capitaine Fracasse, sail past it. The route, monument by monument, is on what you see from the Seine.
