This ranking answers a single question: which cruise should you book if you are two adults with two children, for an hour on the water with no nasty surprises? We scored the five most relevant offers on five criteria and give you our order, with the reasons and the drawbacks of each. Practical questions (babies, snacks, dinner with kids, the amphibious bus) are covered separately on our Seine cruise with kids page. The overall ranking, across every situation, is on the best Seine river cruise.

Five criteria, scored from the parents' side

One hour, no more. Beyond that, a six-year-old's attention collapses, and a one-hour cruise leaves time for a snack before or after. The four sightseeing companies all stick to this format; the Batobus, for its part, is taken in sections.

The open deck. Children want to see, not look through a window. All the big boats have an open upper deck and a covered, heated lower deck; what differs is the space upstairs and how easy it is to get up there.

The commentary. A guide who speaks live, asks questions and answers them holds a child better than a wired audio guide. So we favor live guides, as long as they speak a language your children understand.

The price for two adults and two children, worked out from the fares the companies publish, and what it becomes with a 12-year-old.

Pier access: ramp or stairs, restrooms on board, distance from the Métro. With a stroller, this is often the deciding factor.

What a family of four pays, company by company

Here are our calculations from the adult and child fares published on each company's website, for two adults and two children aged 4 to 11, then for a family whose eldest is 12. Prices on the partner platforms are usually the same as the online fares; they show live in the cards on this page.

Company 2 + 2 online 2 + 2 at the window With a 12-year-old (online)
Vedettes du Pont Neuf €44 €52 €44 (child fare through age 12)
Bateaux Mouches €50 €60 €50 (child fare under 13)
Bateaux Parisiens €54 €60 €63 (full fare from 12)
Vedettes de Paris €56 €62 €64 (full fare from 12)
Batobus, 24h pass €72 — €82 (full fare from 12)

Two takeaways. The gap between the cheapest and the most expensive sightseeing cruise is only about a dozen euros for the whole family: price should not be what decides. And a 12-year-old turns the order upside down: they save you €13 to €14 at Bateaux Mouches and €19 to €20 at Pont Neuf compared with the two Eiffel Tower companies. Every fare table, ticket window included, is on Seine river cruise tickets and prices.

No. 1: Vedettes de Paris, the guide who talks to kids

At Port de Suffren, downstream of Pont d'Iéna, Vedettes de Paris ticks the most boxes. The guide speaks live, in French and English, backed up by an app in 11 languages (bring earphones). For a visiting family whose children speak English, it is the only one of the four big departures where a real person addresses them in their own language. The company also runs a family cruise for ages 6–13, with puzzles about the monuments and a captain's certificate, once or twice a day depending on the season.

Access is the best in our selection: from Pont de Bir-Hakeim, a ramp leads down to the quay, and both Bir-Hakeim Métro station (line 6) and RER C Champ de Mars have an elevator. Avoid the entrance on the Pont d'Iéna side, which has stairs. A timed ticket bought online can be canceled or moved for free up to 24 hours before: with sick kids or a shower in the forecast, that is worth a lot. The fleet is electric, apart from one hybrid boat.

Its drawbacks: it is the most expensive of the four for a family, by a small margin, and guided departures stop in the late afternoon; in the evening, the music-and-drinks cruise takes over, with no guide. Tiqets also sells a family page that combines this cruise with the Bateaux Parisiens Les Incollables® quiz, with two different cancellation rules; read the option you choose carefully before you pay.

No. 2: Bateaux Parisiens, the easiest to fit into your day

At pontoon 3 of Port de la Bourdonnais, upstream of Pont d'Iéna, Bateaux Parisiens wins on logistics. Departures roughly every 30 minutes in the high season, restrooms on every boat, and a sightseeing ticket that is open-dated and valid for a year: if nap time runs over, you take the next boat without changing anything. The wired audio guide on the lower deck has a children's track, in French only, and the Les Incollables® activity booklet comes with the child tickets for the quiz cruise. The company says its tours are suited to children from age 4.

On access, the tourist office reports a ramp to the boat and accessible restrooms on the pontoon; the company says its boats are wheelchair accessible except for the restrooms. Suitcases are turned away and bags checked at the entrance: travel light.

What puts it behind Vedettes de Paris: the commentary is not live, the ticket is non-refundable, and a 12-year-old pays the full fare. Lines at the pontoon in summer are the complaint that comes up most often. The price is the same on all three platforms we compare:

No. 3: Bateaux Mouches, the big open deck at Alma

At Port de la Conférence, Pont de l'Alma, on the right bank, Bateaux Mouches has the biggest boats in Paris, with very wide open upper decks: for a child who wants to watch the bridges pass overhead, it is the best spot. The child fare applies through age 12, which makes it the best-value company as soon as your eldest is past 11. Families with a car will like the free parking during the cruise, and taxis can drive right down to the port.

The tourist office describes a removable ramp between the quay and the boat and accessible restrooms on the pontoon; the ones on board are not adapted. The boat heads up toward Notre-Dame, turns around near the Institut du Monde Arabe and comes back down as far as the Eiffel Tower before returning to Alma.

Why only third: the company does not publish its commentary languages, and the big boats are also the busiest at peak times. The ticket is valid for a year but non-refundable. Our Bateaux Mouches review covers schedules and options.

No. 4 and No. 5: Pont Neuf for the price, the Batobus for the day

Vedettes du Pont Neuf, at the Square du Vert-Galant, is the cheapest of the four: about €44 for the family online, child fare through age 12, a live guide in French and English, an open upper deck and a heated cabin, restrooms on board. The boat sets off toward the Eiffel Tower first, from the heart of the historic center. It would rank higher if not for its access: a staircase roughly two stories high leads down from the Pont Neuf, and the alternative goes via the ramp at 36 quai des Orfèvres, then along cobbled quays. With a stroller, plan to carry it. Cancellation is refunded at 80% more than 48 hours before.

The Batobus closes our ranking because it is not a narrated cruise: a shuttle with nine stops, no guide, no restrooms on board, at €72 for the day for a family of four. It still earns a place for two reasons: strollers are accepted folded, handed to the crew, and you can get off as soon as attention flags. If your day strings together the Eiffel Tower, Orsay and the Jardin des Plantes, it replaces the Métro. Only the Tour Eiffel stop is wheelchair accessible. See our Batobus page for stops and hours.

We leave the amphibious bus and the dinner cruises off the podium: the first, according to the listing, spends only about twenty minutes on the water, at Sèvres, and refuses under-2s; the second last more than an hour and often charge children the adult price.
