Paris Seine, La Marina, Maxim's: who is who

This is the first source of confusion, so let's settle it. A single company, Marina de Bercy, runs several brands from the same quay: Paris Seine, its current trading name; La Marina de Paris, the historic name you still see on the official site and at resellers; and Maxim's sur Seine, its upscale version under a Maxim's license. A travel agency, Extime, also resells its cruises under the "Extime Paris Seine" label, without owning a boat.

Two clarifications prevent mistakes. "Marina de Bercy" is the company's legal name and the address of its head office, not a pier: every public cruise leaves from Solférino. And "Paris Seine" here is a brand name, not the river: when a listing says "dinner with Paris Seine", it means this company.

So a La Marina dinner, a Paris Seine dinner and an Extime Paris Seine dinner share the same pontoon and the same route; what varies is the menu, the time, the drinks and the price shown. Our Seine dinner cruise guide places the company among all the others.

Lunch and dinner cruises: the sittings

The company sells two families of cruises: lunches, at 12:30 pm, and dinners, in two sittings, at 6:45 pm and 9:15 pm.

These are the company's own prices, to be read as "from" figures. The homepage sometimes shows a cheaper Découverte than the product list does: go by the price for the date you pick. A Christmas lunch is sold on 25 December only, from €130.

In our view the 9:15 pm Saveurs dinner is the best deal on the list: two hours on the water, after dark for most of the year, for about the same price as the Découverte, which lasts only 1h15. The Orsay lunch is one of the most affordable ways in Paris to have a proper meal on the water; our Seine lunch and brunch cruises page compares it with the others.

Port de Solférino: boarding at the foot of Orsay

The pontoon is at Port de Solférino, below the Musée d'Orsay on the Promenade Édouard-Glissant side, in the 7th. The same quay serves Maxim's sur Seine, the Canal Saint-Martin boat and the Batobus "Musée d'Orsay" stop, so look for the company's name on the pontoon.

The company suggests Métro line 12 (Solférino or Assemblée nationale), the RER C (Musée d'Orsay) and plenty of buses (24, 63, 68, 69, 73, 83, 84, 94). If you drive, it recommends the Louvre or Montalembert car parks, on rue du Bac; taxis drop off on Quai Anatole-France. Arrive at least a quarter of an hour before departure: the boat does not wait for latecomers.

In our view it is one of the best-placed quays in the city: central, and walkable from Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the Tuileries or Place de la Concorde. Our Seine pier guide places it on the river line.

The fleet and the route

The company names about ten boats on its site: Le Paris, Le Montebello, Le Signac, Le Noti Club, Le Bateau Ivre, Le Grand Pavois, Le Vert Galant, Le Melody Blues, La Rocca IV, La Parisienne, plus a pontoon with a rooftop. It does not say which one runs each public cruise: you do not choose your boat, and no window seat is guaranteed. Le Paris, the biggest with 200 seats, is offered for private hire, moored at Quai Debilly.

The published route leaves Orsay, heads up to Notre-Dame and the Conciergerie, comes back down past the Louvre and Pont Alexandre III, passes the Statue of Liberty on Île aux Cygnes and saves the Eiffel Tower for the end. It is one of the few companies whose official route promises the Statue of Liberty, a real plus if you want to see it from the water.

The Eiffel Tower sparkles for five minutes at the start of every hour after dark, until at least 11 pm; on some evenings, especially in summer, it carries on later — check the tower's website for the day. The 9:15 pm dinner has the best chance of catching a full hour after dark, with no guarantee: see Eiffel Tower sparkle.

What you eat, and what you pay extra to drink

Every menu follows the same pattern: starter, main, dessert. The menu shown recently offered, for example, foie gras or scallops to start, guinea fowl or sea bass as a main, a cut of beef for a €10 supplement, cheese for €8 more, and a pear "Madame Eiffel" dessert. There is a vegetarian menu, and a kids' menu (salmon in puff pastry or chicken, dessert, a drink). Menus change, so look at the one for your date.

The key point: on standard cruises, drinks are not included. The drinks list shows cocktails at around €12, a glass of wine at €8 to €10, bottles from €35 to €75, and a glass of champagne at around €13. The Festif packages include a glass of champagne. So if you are a couple ordering a bottle, add €35 to €75 to the menu price before comparing with a company that includes wine, such as Bateaux Parisiens.

The official site shows no child price and publishes no dress code; the agency that resells these cruises talks of casual dress. In our view, neat smart-casual clothes will never make you stand out. Animals are not allowed, except guide dogs.

Booking: Headout, GetYourGuide or the official site

You can book on the company's site or with our partners. Headout sells the lunch cruise under the La Marina de Paris name, with thousands of reviews: it is the listing we feature for lunchtime.

GetYourGuide sells several of the company's dinners: a three-course gourmet dinner, an "early evening" dinner under the Paris Seine name, and "bistronomic" dinners at around €59. Those last ones do not appear under that name in the official site's list of dinners, so check the time, the menu and the drinks included on the listing before you book. You will also find a private cruise on a Paris Seine boat, at around €800 for the boat.

The cards above show the price we recorded at each partner; the real difference from the official site is often the cancellation policy, set out below. Our GetYourGuide, Tiqets or Headout page compares the three platforms.

Cancellation and the unexpected

On the official site, cancellations must be made in writing. More than 72 hours before, it costs €15 per person; between 72 and 48 hours, half the price; less than 48 hours before, the full amount. Special dates (1 January, Valentine's Day, Bastille Day, 24 and 25 December, 31 December) follow a stricter rule: €15 per person more than eight days out, the full price after that. A date change is still possible up to 6 hours before, for €15 per person.

If the boat cannot leave the quay, because of a flood for example, the company gives a 15 % reduction. Floods are mostly a winter and spring affair.

On the platforms, the conditions depend on the listing and are shown before you pay: they can be more flexible, or stricter, than the official site's. If your dates are uncertain, that, more than a few euros' difference, should guide your choice.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

La Marina suits anyone who wants a meal on the Seine from a central quay at a reasonable price: a weekday lunch between two museums, a 9:15 pm dinner after dark for a couple, a family that wants a kids' menu. The route out to the Statue of Liberty will please anyone who wants to see it from the water.

It suits travelers who want an all-inclusive price less well: with drinks on top, the bill climbs fast and gets close to the big companies'. It is not for anyone who wants to choose a table by the window. For a cheaper dinner, see Paris en Scène at Port de Javel Haut, or our cheap Seine dinner cruise page. For a dressier evening with music, the same company runs Maxim's sur Seine.
