Le Calife and L'Estello: two boats, one house

Le Calife belongs to Nouvelles Rives, a company based on Quai Malaquais in the 6th arrondissement. It runs two boats: Le Calife, a barge that travel guides describe as a former Freycinet-gauge working boat still fitted with its original 1939 Kromhout engine, and L'Estello, a second, smaller boat that runs an earlier evening sitting.

It is an independent house that does not sell through any of the platforms we compare. Neither GetYourGuide, Tiqets nor Headout sells its cruises: the only way to book is through its own website or by phone. We say so plainly because it is the rule of this guide: when a company has no partner, we still describe it, and further down we point you to the closest dinner cruises you can book online.

The company is still running: its menus are current and online booking is open. Its most useful quirk is its flood clause, explained below.

What Le Calife sells: dinners and weekend lunches

The offer comes down to three sailings. Le Calife's dinner cruise leaves at 8:30 pm for 2h20 on the water, which makes it one of the longest dinners in Paris. L'Estello leaves earlier, at 6:30 pm, for 2 hours. Le Calife's lunch leaves at 12:30 pm, on Saturdays and Sundays only, also for 2h20.

The company asks you to be on board half an hour before departure; after that, your table may be given away.

That rhythm suggests two uses. L'Estello at 6:30 pm suits people who like to eat early or are traveling with children; it shares the spirit of the short sittings on our early dinner cruise page, only longer. Le Calife at 8:30 pm is the full evening, in the dark for most of the year. Our Seine lunch and brunch cruises page compares its lunch with the others.

Boarding in front of Pont des Arts

The boat boards at Port des Saints-Pères, Quai Malaquais, in the 6th: the company places it at Place de l'Institut, in front of Pont des Arts, on the left bank. In our view it is the best starting point of any dinner cruise in Paris: right in the middle of the city, between the Louvre and Île de la Cité, a few minutes' walk from Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

The company suggests two ways in. From the left bank: RER B and C to Saint-Michel, Métro lines 4 and 10 to Odéon. From the right bank: RER A to Châtelet, Métro 1 to Louvre-Rivoli or Métro 7 to Pont-Neuf, then walk across Pont des Arts, which is the nicest way to arrive.

Our Seine pier guide places this quay on the river line with all the others.

The boats, the route and the flood clause

The company sums up the route in one line: from Notre-Dame to the Eiffel Tower. It also says Le Calife may use the bras de la Monnaie, the left-bank channel that passes right by Notre-Dame, at the captain's discretion. Neither the boats' capacity nor any music on board is announced, so we promise neither.

The truly unusual part is written in black and white in the terms of sale: "beyond 2.60 m, navigation is no longer possible". The level is read on the Austerlitz gauge, where the Seine normally sits around 0.82 m. For comparison, the general navigation rules close the bras de la Monnaie at 3 m and ban all navigation through Paris at 4.30 m. So Le Calife stops sailing earlier than the others. In that case two solutions are planned: dinner is served at the quay with a €24 discount per person, or another boat is substituted, for example during a flood alert.

Floods are a winter and spring affair, and cruises are sometimes suspended for a few days. If you are booking between January and April, keep an eye on the river level in the days before.

Le Calife menu and prices

Every package has three courses and a welcome cocktail; Prestige adds an aged cheese. As so often on the Seine, the difference is in the drinks.

These are the company's own prices, as "from" figures. Holiday evenings cost a lot more: Christmas Eve is listed at €259, New Year's Eve from €469.

In our view the Royal package is the real benchmark here: at €139 with wine and champagne included, it compares fairly with the mid-range packages of the big companies, with a longer cruise. The €97 Classique has no wine, so budget for it on top. Children have their own menu up to and including age 12, but every child who takes a seat pays for the cruise. No dress code is specified.

Booking and cancellation

You book on the company's website, which uses an online booking module, or by phone on +33 1 43 54 50 04, from 10 am to 5 pm. None of our partners sells these cruises, so you will find no booking link and no price comparison table on this page, and we earn nothing if you book with Le Calife.

The cancellation terms are strict. More than 72 hours before, cancelling costs a 15 % fee, and the rest becomes a credit valid on another cruise until 31 December of that year. Less than 72 hours before, there is no refund and no date change. An unaccompanied minor under 16 may be refused boarding.

Dinner cruises you can book online instead

If you want to book right now, with the cancellation terms shown before you pay, here are the three dinners we recommend instead of Le Calife, each for a specific reason.

The 8:30 pm dinner at Bateaux Parisiens, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower (Port de la Bourdonnais), is the most direct equivalent: 2h30 on the water, live music and packages with drinks included. Its dress code rules out jeans and sneakers. Paris en Scène, at Port de Javel Haut, costs less, for 1h45. And if you were hoping for jazz, the dinner-concert at Le Son de la Terre, facing Notre-Dame, is a real concert, but the barge stays at the quay: it does not sail.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

Le Calife suits anyone who wants a long dinner in the very center of Paris without trekking to the Eiffel Tower or the 15th: a couple staying in Saint-Germain or near the Louvre, friends who would rather stroll across Pont des Arts than take a cab. The weekend lunch is a good idea for visitors who prefer their monuments in daylight.

It suits travelers whose dates may shift less well: cancelling costs 15 % and refunds only as a credit. It is a poor fit for winter visitors with only one possible evening, because of the 2.60 m rule. And it promises neither music nor a party atmosphere: if that is what you want, see our page on dinner cruises with live music.

Our Le Calife review and rating

We rated Le Calife on the same five criteria as the other companies. The score takes into account that it is not sold through our partners, which weighs on flexibility more than on the evening itself.
