Eiffel Tower Sparkle Times, and the Seine Cruise to See It
The Eiffel Tower sparkles for five minutes at the start of every hour after dark, until at least 11 pm. From the water, all you need is to be at the right point of the loop right on the hour, and that depends on your pier and the month.

What time does the Eiffel Tower sparkle?
The Eiffel Tower sparkles for five minutes at the start of every hour after dark, until at least 11 pm; on some evenings, especially in summer, it carries on later — check the tower's website for the day.
Two kinds of lighting follow one another. First the golden lighting and the beacon, which switch on automatically at nightfall, triggered by light sensors, within about ten minutes. Then, on every full hour, the sparkle: thousands of flashing bulbs crackling across the whole height of the tower for five minutes. The show used to last ten minutes until 2008, when it was cut to five.
The first sparkle of the evening comes on the first full hour after dark. The tower gives its own example: if night falls at 8:35 pm, the lights come on within ten minutes and the first sparkle is at 9 pm. So there is never a sparkle in daylight, and never on the half-hour: it is always on the hour, for five minutes, before the tower goes back to its golden glow.
How often? Once an hour, no more. How long? Five minutes, which is short on a boat moving at 12 km/h at most: on the hour, you need to be looking in the right direction already. The rest of this page explains how to manage that from the Seine; the evening on the water as a whole is on our night cruise page.
How late does the Eiffel Tower sparkle?
This is the question everyone asks, and the honest answer is: until at least 11 pm. The tower's own published pages do not agree on the end of the evening, which varies with the season, the monument's opening hours and energy-saving measures. So we do not give a fixed time for the last sparkle: count on 11 pm, and check the official website on the evening itself if you are aiming later.
In practice, this mostly matters in summer. In May, June and July, darkness only falls between about 10 pm and 10:40 pm: the first sparkle is the 11 pm one, and it is often the only one you can count on. The last sightseeing departures are then a matter of minutes. In winter, by contrast, the tower sparkles from 6 pm or 7 pm depending on the month, and the end of the evening hardly matters: a 7 pm or 8 pm boat is bound to see one.
Note too that the tower closes to visitors at times that change through the year (11 pm in mid-October). The lighting and the sparkle have nothing to do with a summit ticket: from the water, you see them for free.

Eiffel Tower sparkle times by month, and the departure to match
The first sparkle closely follows the end of civil twilight. The table gives our reference points for the middle of each month. The rule of thumb: from the Eiffel Tower or Alma piers, a departure 20 to 25 minutes before the hour usually has the tower in view right on the hour.
| Month | Dark by about | First sparkle | Departure to aim for, 20–25 min before the hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 5:55 pm | 6 pm | 5:35–5:40 pm, or any evening departure |
| February | 6:45 pm | 7 pm | 6:35–6:40 pm |
| March | 7:25 pm | 8 pm | 7:35–7:40 pm |
| April | 9:15 pm | 10 pm | 9:35–9:40 pm |
| May | 10 pm | 11 pm | 10:30–10:40 pm |
| June | 10:40 pm | 11 pm | 10:30–10:40 pm |
| July | 10:30 pm | 11 pm | 10:30–10:40 pm |
| August | 9:45 pm | 10 pm | 9:35–9:40 pm |
| September | 8:35 pm | 9 pm | 8:35–8:40 pm |
| October | 7:35 pm | 8 pm | 7:35–7:40 pm |
| November | 5:45 pm | 6 pm | 5:35–5:40 pm |
| December | 5:30 pm | 6 pm | 5:35–5:40 pm |
The companies leave at fixed times, often on the hour and the half-hour: take the departure closest to the window. No company publishes a timetable built around the sparkle or promises it, and a boat can leave the quay a few minutes late. At the end of March and the end of October the clock change shifts everything by an hour: after the last Sunday in October the first sparkle jumps an hour earlier, to about 7 pm, and only comes back to 6 pm from mid-November.
| Month | Sunset (1st) | Sunset (15th) | Dark (15th) | First sparkle |

| March | 18:33 | 18:55 | 19:27 | 20:00 |
| April | 20:21 | 20:42 | 21:15 | 22:00 |
| May | 21:05 | 21:25 | 22:03 | 23:00 |

| November | 17:31 | 17:11 | 17:45 | 18:00 |
| December | 16:57 | 16:54 | 17:31 | 18:00 |
Local times computed for Paris (NOAA algorithm, ±2 min). The Eiffel Tower sparkles for 5 minutes at the top of every hour from nightfall, the last time at 23:00; in summer darkness comes so late that the first sparkle waits until 22:00 or 23:00.
Where the boat is on the hour, pier by pier
A one-hour sightseeing cruise traces a loop. Knowing where you are on the hour tells you whether the tower will be ahead of you, behind you or hidden by a quay.
- Port de la Bourdonnais (Bateaux Parisiens, pontoon 3), upstream of the Pont d'Iéna. The loop starts and ends at the tower: first upstream toward the Île Saint-Louis, then a turn, then back down. The two safe moments are departure and arrival, at the foot of the tower. A boat leaving on the hour shows you the sparkle as you pull away (look back); a boat leaving an hour earlier brings you back to the foot of the tower at roughly the full hour, give or take a few minutes. In summer, the 10 pm departure, back around 11 pm, is in our view the smartest choice.
- Port de Suffren (Vedettes de Paris), downstream of the Pont d'Iéna. Same loop logic, upstream first. In the evening it is the Apéro & Musicale cruise that sails, roughly from 7 pm to 10:30 pm, later in high season.
- Port de la Conférence, Pont de l'Alma (Bateaux Mouches), on the Right Bank. The tower is in view at departure and on the way back, downstream of the bridge. The loop heads up past Notre-Dame through the narrow Monnaie channel as far as the Institut du Monde Arabe, then comes back down the other side of the islands.
- Square du Vert-Galant (Vedettes du Pont Neuf). Here the boat first heads downstream toward the Eiffel Tower before turning back: you are normally closest to it around the middle of the cruise. A departure about half an hour before the hour is, in our view, the right calculation.
If your departure does not fall inside the window, do not worry too much: the sparkle comes back on the next hour, and a winter evening gives you several. The full route is on our what you see from the Seine page, and the piers on our Seine piers page.

Eiffel Tower light show times in winter and summer
From November to February, night falls before 7 pm, at the earliest around 5:30 pm in December. The tower then sparkles on every hour until at least 11 pm, from 6 pm between mid-November and January and from 7 pm in early November and in February: any evening departure sees one, often two if you leave a little before the hour. It is the easiest season for the sparkle, at the cost of the cold on the open deck. Every boat has a heated lower deck, but you see better outside. Winter floods sometimes suspend cruises for a few days, so check on the day.
From May to July, everything comes down to the last departures. At Bateaux Parisiens, sightseeing boats leave until 10:30 pm from April to September, and until 11 pm on weekends and daily in July–August. At Bateaux Mouches the last departure from April to October is around 10 pm, with an extra 10:30 pm on Saturdays in October. The 11 pm sparkle therefore falls during the loop of these last boats. At Bateaux Parisiens, the other option is the 10 pm departure, which is back at the foot of the tower around 11 pm.
April, August and September sit in between: the first sparkle comes between 9 pm and 10 pm, at times when almost every company is still sailing. September, with sunset around 8 pm and a sparkle at 9 pm, lets you see both on one outing. Our Seine sunset cruise page gives the golden-hour times that come before.
Seine dinner cruise and the sparkle
A dinner of two hours or more automatically covers several full hours after dark, which multiplies your chances. The Bateaux Parisiens 8:30 pm dinner, from Port de la Bourdonnais, lasts 2h30 and runs from the BnF to the Statue of Liberty; the Bateaux Mouches 8:30 pm dinner gets back to the Pont de l'Alma around 10:45 pm. Ducasse sur Seine, at Port Debilly facing the tower, ends its 8:30 pm dinner at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. Paris en Scène and Le Capitaine Fracasse leave from Port de Javel Haut, downstream of the tower, and sail past it; the 9:45 pm Paris en Scène service therefore covers both 10 pm and 11 pm.
In summer, on the other hand, a 6 pm or 6:15 pm service is back before dark: no sparkle to hope for. For menus, prices and dress codes, see our Seine dinner cruise page. For a proposal timed to the sparkle, a private boat is safer than a shared timetable: that is what our proposal on the Seine page is about.

Photographing the sparkle from the boat
Five minutes go by fast. Go up to the top deck a few minutes before the hour, work out which side the tower will be on and get your camera ready: the sparkle starts all at once, right on the hour. Photos of the lit tower are fine for private use, including social media; professional use of the night lighting, however, needs permission from the company that operates the tower.
The boat is moving and the light is low: go for a short video or several burst shots rather than a long exposure. From the lower deck, the windows reflect the cabin lights and often spoil the picture.
